A Great Loss to the Rotary World
Past President of Rotary Club of Chandigarh Maj B.M. Singh passed away on 1st November morning. He was 89.
A jovial ever-smiling personality was there with us last Monday, as he attended our Club's regular Monday meeting on 26th October.
I met him in 1981, when he was our Club Bulletin's Editor. He would visit Rtn Past Rotary International President Raja Saboo, with whom I worked as the PR man of his company, Groz Beckert Saboo Limited, and I often helped him with Rotary bulletin contents.
He held the reins of the club leadership in 1980-81 and during
the year some of the landmark projects included helping the inmates of Lepers
Colony, and organised an all India Handicapped sports meet for the physically
challenged, besides organising the first ever Rotary Youth Leadership Award
(RYLA).
In 1986-87, he led the Group Study Exchange team leader to District 968, Australia.
He is also known for having setup an ice-cream parlour in Sector 17, called 'Yankee Doodle' (1989 perhaps), which was a big hit in the city and was a popular hangout for the youngsters.
Last few years, we saw him walking slowly with measured steps into the Rotary House, wearing his usual bright smile and warmth in his strong handshakes.
We shall miss him always.
