Mark Maloney nominated RI President Nominee 2019-20

Mark Daniel Maloney is the choice of Nominating Committee as RI President Nominee 2019-20.

Mark Daniel Maloney, of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2019-20. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested.

“The clubs are where Rotary happens,” says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support and strengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary’s culture as a service-oriented membership organization, and test new regional approaches for growth.

“With the eradication of polio, recognition for Rotary will be great and the opportunities will be many,” he says. “We have the potential to become the global powerhouse for doing good.”

Maloney is a principal in the law firm of Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section of taxation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama Law Institute.

He has been active in Decatur’s religious community, chairing his church’s finance council and a local Catholic school board. He has also served as president of the Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, chair of Morgan County Meals on Wheels, and director of the United Way of Morgan County and the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce.

A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; trustee and vice chair of The Rotary Foundation; president’s aide; zone coordinator; and a leader on the Future Vision and 2014 Sydney Convention Committees. He serves on the Operations Review Committee and has served on the Rotary Peace Centers Committee. He has received the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. Maloney and his wife, Gay, are Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members.

Youth should help create a better, safer and happier world: Kalyan Banerjee

Rotary is spending nearly US$ 5 Billion every year on humanitarian projects.

 

Rotary spends nearly US$ 5 billion annually around the world on humanitarian service projects alone, informed Kalyan Banerjee, the world President of Rotary International.

Talking to the media in JW Marriott, Kalyan Banerjee felt that Rotary's strengths include its ability to attract leaders from different vocations around the world, as well as its role in promoting peace.

My goal is for Rotary to become the preferred organization for today's generation to join and participate in, to make the world better, safer and happier," he said.

He informed that it was for the first time that Rotary was invited to World Economic Forum at Jordan and Mumbai which he addressed and would be participated in the last week of January at Davos, Switzerland, to engage the businesses in the humanitarian services.

As president of Rotary International, Banerjee oversees Rotary’s top priority of eradicating polio, a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in Africa and Asia.

Since 1985, Rotary club members worldwide have contributed more than US$1 billion and countless volunteer hours to the effort. Rotary is also working to raise an additional $200 million to fulfill its commitment for a $355 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Great progress has been made, and the incidence of paralytic polio infection has plunged worldwide from 350,000 cases in 1988 to fewer than 1,300 in 2010, he said, and already even earlier endemic states like UP and Bihar had no polio case reported for the last over 18 months.

The third Indian to be the world president of world's largest humanitarian service organizations, Rotary International, Kalyan Banerjee, arrived in Chandigarh today for a two-days visit, and addressed a meeting of over 1000 Rotarians in the morning at Shivalik Public School, Mohali.

Banerjee is a director of United Phosphorus Limited, the largest Indian agrochemical manufacturer, and the chair of United Phosphorus (Bangladesh) Limited, who took over the reigns of Rotary International on 1^st of July 2011, and gave to the Rotary world the theme, “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”.

Polio Warriors flagged off

It's been a proud moment today when two Rotaractors of our Rotaract Club of Chandigarh, were flagged off by Past Rotary International President Rajendra K. Saboo from Hans Raj Public School, Panchkula, where the District RYLA also culminated, for their 8000kms round-trip across the country to engage people in Rotary's fight against polio.
Rtr. Gaurav Gupta is final year engineering student of UIET, Panjab University pursuing BioTechnology and Rtr. Deepak Sharma is a first year BA student of DAV College, Chandigarh.

These 'Polio Warriors' left today for Delhi in the afternoon, and on the way were received warmly by the Rotarians of Derabassi. They have safely reached Delhi tonight.
Tomorrow morning they will be flagged off from Delhi and via Agra they would rest for the night at Kanpur on Day 2.

Fight Against Polio must continue!

What are we doing to eradicate polio? The biggest challenge before us is for each one of us to contribute to the Rotary Foundation to urgently complete the target of USD200 million that qualifies us to get Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation contribution. Luckily, Rotarians around the world have raised USD140 million. Yet, there is much more to be achieved.
Our District 3080 launched a fund-raising campaign "Children for Children", where school children in schools around the District are reaching out to the community to raise funds. More details can be had from DG Madhukar Malhotra or me.
We have been going around the schools and sensitising them about what Rotary is doing. Surprisingly, not very many know about Rotary's role. It's time each one of us reach out, share the facts about Rotary's contribution to this entire global campaign to eradicate polio from the face of this earth.
